My First Zoetrope
My life has been pretty digital lately so I decided to put a project together that let me step away from the computer and get arts and craftsy, at least for part of the building process. The idea behind this piece was to use the turntable in two ways that are on opposite sides of the technical spectrum. One being video scratching, which at the moment is the most advanced thing you can do with a turntable. The second thing is the zoetrope, which is the origin of motion picture. Anyone who has taken a film class will recognize the Muybridge images!
This was so much fun to make, definitely one of the best production experiences I've had. Helps to have a kick-ass crew, a few good ideas, and a beautiful location. We got to shoot at the Regency Center in San Francisco, which was built exactly 100 years ago, in a room that not too many people get to step foot in.

Michael Jackson
There's not much to say that hasn't been said already. Although I've never come close to meeting him, it feels as if a close friend has passed. Michael Jackson was, and still is, a huge influence on me. Like many other kids in my generation, the first record my parents ever gave me was Thriller. I've since picked up close to a dozen more copies. I've wore out most of them but I still have that very first one. Someone pointed out to me that I've used a Michael Jackson track in almost every show I've done. I think most would agree that you can't go wrong with MJ. He is a huge positive influence on most all entertainers and we will NEVER see a more prolific artist in our lifetime, period.
I would encourage everyone to tell everyone you love and admire how much they mean to you (I can be reached at relm(at)mikerelm.com) . No seriously, you never know if and when you'll get another chance to tell someone how important they are to you.
I use this as my computer wallpaper right now, it's called "Michael Jackson 5" by Glen Inocencio:

The Webby Awards Recap
The Webbys were an absolute blast! It was a dream come true for me, performing for a room full of people who have created most of my favorite places to go on the web: YouTube, Failblog, The Onion, Next New Networks, New York Times, Huffington Post, and of course a little company called Twitter. To add to the excitement, Martha Stewart, Trent Reznor, Jimmy Fallon, Sarah Silverman, Cameron Diaz, Charlie Rose, and Lisa Kudrow were also in the house.
I'd really like to thank everyone at the Webby Awards for making this happen, it was an amazing experience and the show just keeps getting better.
I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've been interviewed on the red carpet where the host actually knew who I was without the help of a publicist. Thank goodness for the lovely Shira Lazar, best red carpet host ever.
Seth McFarlane wasn't able to make it so I got to step in and present his award the only way I know how:
And here's my performance, thank you Webby Awards!

New Watches!!!
Doug Cohen (Flüd Watches) just sent me what could possibly be the sickest time pieces on the face of the earth. Leave it to the man behind A Great Day in Turntablism to make a turntable watch classy enough to be worn with a suit! Even the cases they come with are dope (peep the pillow that "The Cartridge" rests on). Check out these bad boys and more at the official Flüd website. Thanks Doug!
